Defense Makes the Biggest Statement in Seattle Blow Out

Updated: December 18, 2017

The two biggest images in the minds of fans during the Rams blowout win over the Seahawks were Todd Gurley and Aaron Donald. Gurley barreled through Seattle defenders like Falthiers stampeding through the Canto Bright. Donald meanwhile treated the Seattle offensive line like Admiral Holdo’s cruiser treated the First Order. Donald had three sacks a forced fumble and five combined tackles. He took away Russell Wilson’s ability to turn into a human escape pod. As great as Donald was, he wasn’t a one man gang yesterday. In a variety of ways the Rams defense stepped up to all but clinch the division in a place that seemed as impenetrable as Snoke’s Star Destroyer. Donald was the spark that lit the fire but the rest of the defense proved they were just as formidable.

Robert Quinn’s season has felt quiet. He struggled a bit in adjusting to playing linebacker full time in Wade Phillips’ 3-4 defense. In the last few weeks however, he’s come along in fine fashion. In addition to Donald’s three sacks Quinn had two. In the last four weeks he’s tallied five sacks after not getting one in the previous month. He’s posted a total of 8.5 sacks on the season and is getting hot at the right time. The secondary took a big hit with the injury to Keyvon Webster and that was a group that couldn’t afford a major injury. Luckily, Lamarcus Joyner, Nickel Robey-Coleman, and Troy Hill acquitted themselves just fine. They took away the Seattle receivers preventing Russell Wilson from finding anyone to throw to before Donald crushed him like a pack of Lucky’s.

Goff and Gurley have the offense firing on any and all cylinders. After having a shaky season the defense is finally catching up with the offense. They’ve struggled against the run all season but finally put together a complete game. Now that the Rams are all but assured a playoff game this year they have the chance to make a real run. Philadelphia is without Wentz, they’ve already beat the Saints, and can now hang with Minnesota. The Rams are one of the most complete teams in the league and now they’ve had their statement win. And boy was it a statement!
