Legatron Headed to IR with Back Injury

Updated: December 20, 2017

The football gods giveth and the football gods taketh away. Just a day after being named to the Pro Bowl, Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein AKA Legatron is now on the injured reserve list with a back injury. Legatron had a resurgent season scoring a total of 158 points. He made 95% of his field goals including a league leading six from 50 yards or more. This is a major blow to the Rams as he was a reliable source for points when defenses kept Goff and Gurley in check. The special teams of the Rams were top notch all season under coach John Fassel. In the short term this injury won’t be noticeable but come playoff time fans will definitely feel Legatron’s absence.

Legatron had a bounce back year after signing a three year extension and after a season many cited as a down year. He only made 86% of his kicks in 2016 and 66.7% the year prior. Fans were ready to run him out of town on the Blue Line but this season has seen Legatron back to his former self. This changes how Sean McVay will approach the game as he can no longer count on having a kicker that can nail it from 50 yards and beyond.

They signed rookie kicker Sam Ficken. At Penn State his best season saw him make 82.2 % of his kicks and only one of them was from long range. He is a far cry from Legatron but at this point in the season beggars can’t be choosers. Still, this is a risky move and one that could prevent the Rams from winning the NFC. Injuries have been a big part of the season as of late with many star players going down. Legatron wasn’t on par with Carson Wentz on the star scale but his importance to the Rams can’t be understated. With the NFC being as tight as it is the Rams couldn’t afford a blow like this. Ficken will get his chance to shine but he definitely has big cleats to fill.
